House in Raleigh, 1954
EDUARDO CATALANAO
Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano only designed a few buildings in his career, because he dedicated his life to teaching. However those buildings were brillant, especially his own house knowed at the time as the "Potato Chip". (Because it look like a Pringles potato chip).
While teaching in the university in USA, he was investigating with economical structural geometric forms. The roof was a hypar. It was built with laminated wood and aluminum; and supported by a tense underground structure. This solution allowed the building to have a columness interior with a 23 meters long cantilever.
The result is a construction that doesn´t look like a house, but a weightless poetic form suspended whithin the woods.
Unfortunatly the house was abandoned and later demolished. We lost a unique and irrepetible masterpiece.
